XANDER HARRIS - "Urban Gothic" LP (Not Not Fun)

Another notch in NNF's bed post, and one of our favorites for 2011, thus far.Xander Harris aka: Justin Sweatt, conjures up thirteen unlucky tracks of nightmarish industrial doom and gloom, with his debut full length, Urban Gothic. Not unlike label mate Umberto's Italo-horror club scores, Urban Gothic further explores the dark corners of goth and industrial music.Plenty of nods to John Carpenter's dramatic sound-scapes, and Claudio Simonetti's creepy synth manipulations, laid atop minimalist, Moroder style street beats.A bit heavier on the late 80's Euro club tip than the aforementioned, but remember, this is not a film score. This is dance music for the spirit world.Creeper anthems and paranoid campfire tales put to tape.Urban Gothic is far from any painfully sequenced laptop jam, the songs are quite good and terribly addictive. The stiff, robotic elements of typical machine drumming and motorik programming bores have been removed, as Harris has apparently played all of the percussion himself, with the use of electronic drum pads.It makes for a looser, more organic approach to the grave rave.Deep synth chords fill the air, like a thick black smoke rising from a smoldering ash. Those icy arpeggios and haunting melodies just seem to slither down through the cracks of throbbing bass lines perfectly.Visions of a giant axe swinging overhead in slow motion, a ghoulish hand creeping over someones shoulder, and a smoke-filled torture chamber flood your mind's eye with each listen.Things are pitch black and neon pink all at once, a shady old house in a familiar part of town.Given the midnight horror marathon vibe of this record, it remains a totally danceable and fun listen. With song titles like "Hatchet In Your Teeth", "Fucking Eat Your Face", and "I Want More Than Just Blood", you can't go wrong.Or, you've gone terribly wrong, in all of the right ways.Killer B-horror flick stills on the cover to boot.Highly recommended cemetery jams for after-after parties and introvert bedroom clubbing.

CULT OF YOUTH - "Cult of Youth" LP/CD (Sacred Bones)

Cult of Youth return with a fantastic new full length, complete with a new lineup and a new home at Sacred Bones Records.Originally a solo project of the talented Sean Ragon, a New Yorker with a big heart for early industrial and folk pioneers.Functioning as a one man band, he released a sturdy seven inch, followed by a painfully overlooked full length, as well as last year's awesome "Filthy Plumage In An Open Sea!" twelve inch EP.After the release of Filthy Plumage, Ragon enlisted three new members to his pagan folk army, a bass player, violinist, and a drummer. This new lineup brought a much fuller, fleshed out sound to the existing set list, and it wasn't long before the group started writing music together as a band. The result of this new formation and collective style of songwriting is a vast and powerful eleven song full length, overflowing with heathen folk ballads, driving battle hymns, and darkened punk aesthetic.Ragon valiantly leads his newly formed battalion of strings and galloping percussion into battle, armed with his steady-handed acoustic strumming and his deep, commanding voice. His ability to write a great song, from front to back, radiates on this album. Each song possesses a rhythmic flow that sounds so natural and unforced, that it's hard to believe the band has only been playing together for a little over a year or so.
Cult of Youth are likely a product of their influences, yet they are completely drenched in their own creative juices, without sounding pretentious or contrived, cleverly pulling from the aesthetics of classic Neo-Folk, Gothic and Industrial acts like Death in June, Skinny Puppy, Throbbing Gristle, and Einsturzende Neubauten.Glenn Maryanski's robotic drumming holds things together tightly, filling out Ragon's bare-boned strumming, and adding new depth to his craft. The sturdy sound of the electric bass follows his riffs closely, occasionally crawling off on it's own runs, and the soaring beauty provided by the gentle violin finds it's place among the rhythmic bliss quite easily, and plays on like another voice, creating beautiful harmonies with Ragon. There are quite a few moments of undeniable beauty throughout these songs, considering the outright seriousness of their dark content. This group is indeed worthy of your immediate attention, and have given us a brave new world to discover.Incredible.

WATER BORDERS - "Akko" 12inch (Hungry For Power)

The rather young, UK based Hungry For Power label has been releasing some pretty great sounds as of late, and quickly becoming our newest obsession. With a few excellent ep's from outsider acts like Peepholes and Cold Pumas under their belt, they now give us a giant monster of a 12" from San Fransisco duo Water Borders.I've been reading a bit of hype around their video for a remix of the track, featuring vocals by Glasser, going on about how "disturbing" the images are.I've watched it a few times now, and it is a bit unsettling, sure.See for yourself below.

Akko, meshes elements of early 80's goth and industrial gloom, with a bit of heathen folk strumming and down-tempo electro clicks and cracks. This thing is the real deal.Imagine the more ethereal moments of Coil's "Loves Secret Domain" used as a backdrop for a somber Andrew Eldritch ballad, with Death In June strumming along in the background. All off this is clear and present, and other downer acts of the last few decades may catch your ear, but there is something terrifying about this track that sets is apart from other recent things of this nature. There are some pretty horrific tones floating around throughout, and some equally chilling shrieks and moans make their way into the mix as well.Industrial machine-kicks and sharp snares crack along steadily, dragging the piles of woozy synths and acoustic strums through the mud and into a giant hole, where they perform ritualistic dances around a fire.

It's hard to pin something like this, based on a single track and a few remixes, but if this record is any indication of what Water Borders are shooting for, we are more than a little stoked on what they're new EP will do to us.Big win for the dark arts.More to follow.

White Ring/oOoOO - split 7" (Emotion)

Witch Haus...yup.You've heard of it.I'm sure your weirdo friends who pretend to be neo-goth introverts, but are really cool as a fucking cucumber, spit this term out at random. It makes me giggle.
White Ring is a talented young gal from NYC, who is sometimes joined by friends in a live setting. On "Roses", she conjures up some fairly dense, ultra thick synth blasts, and throws them up against crispy, bangin' machine drums. Her voice lurks somewhere between soaring melody and horrifying shriek. Both seem to work rather well next to the giant walls of analog synth wash and the heavy boom-boom-clap.I am a huge fan of their demo cd-r, which is probably long gone by now, but worth the hunt for sure.
The flipside offers up a brand new studio track called "Seaww" from our beloved beat lurks, oOoOO.This act has been dick-stroked by just about every "top-notch" music blog you can think of, and they are about to get the same treatment with this one as well.I just love this stuff.I've seen them compared to Salem more than a few times, and I suppose it's not so far off base, but they've got their own thing going on for sure.I've even heard people compare them to "Art of Noise in drag"...pretty rad.Slow moving, tattered 808 beats, coupled with other random shakers, bass drops, and things that rattle wildly are laid out as the foundation for some rather dark and ethereal tones.
Weird film  and voice samples are slowed down, sped up, disassembled, and reconstructed into catchy rhythms and chilling synth swells.Their music is for the most part a very dark and haunting affair, but they are good at sneaking in these very faint, uplifting melodies amongst the haze of their psyched-out whirls and ghostly beat collage. This stuff has a tendency to drift into nothingness, and stay there for the remainder of the song, or album, but oOoOO are kind of stellar songwriters, or producers, rather..whatever works for you..and most every bit of this is a compelling, ritualistic listen.Recommended.After you soak in this for a while, check out their recent ep on the young Tri Angle label..Stunning.

BALAM ACAB - "See Birds" EP (Tri Angle)

The recently birthed Tri Angle label, evil twin sister to the prolific Kompakt label based out of Brooklyn is pretty much pioneering the dark and ghostly dance craze known as the "witch house" movement.
You may also known it as "drag" or "haunted haus", or the more commonly used, and personal favorite the -"ghost bump" tag.Whatever you are calling this outsider genre, it's fucking massive, and all kinds of displaced and/or jaded weirdos are just loving it.Some of other notable acts that fit this plug are Creep, White Ring, oOoOO, Modern Witch, and Sleep Over.
I'm not trying to sell you anything here by any means, but the outline is simple: take your favorite down-tempo/idm/electro act for the last ten years so, mash it together with the latest rare/unearthed cold-wave compilation, drop it down a few octaves, sprinkle a bit of hi-hat hooking atop, and clutter that with spooky voice samples and whirring drones. Now you have a "witch house" masterpiece.I'm not trying to downplay these artists in any way. But, it is what it is, ans that is that.
Balam Acab is by far my favorite of the bunch, and "See Birds" takes us deeper into their dreamy black abyss, like some kind of pleasantly ignorable soundtrack, for a hell ride through the fire on a giant purple cloud made of gentle whispers and sharp skeletal remains. They've got this very pure and organic vibe that runs through their black veins, and ultimately sets them apart from the herd.Deep synthesizer tones swell up and slowly glaze over the layers of swirling, mysterious voice samples..
Classic 808 beats rule the pool in their world, dense low thumps and tattered claps make up most of the percussive end, with slow-paced, early hip hop production trickery to make things solid.Elements of dub, electro, soul, and micro-house are tossed into the pot and just enough neo-goth cold shouldering is poured over top, and seeps down deep into their core.Sparse, haunting voice samples rise up from the ash and dance around throughout the songs, most of them slowed down to nearly a dead hault, and doused with reverb and delays.Pure black magic.
Another attribute that sets them apart from their contemporaries, is their love for soaring, joyful melodies. Most of these acts rely on cold, gloomy dissonance, where as Balam Acab have a knack for a laying down a perfect mix of brooding creep-outs, and bright, uplifting melodies. Some of their delicate synth arpeggios are so vibrant and colorful, they send chills right up your spine, and leave you wanting much, much more.A great little ep from an act that is sure to wow us with a proper full length sooner or later.Keep your eyes peeled.Meanwhile, check out the other releases Tri Angle has to offer.Killer stuff.

CULT OF YOUTH - "Filthy Plumage in an Open Sea" 12" mini-LP (Avant)

In early 2009, I stumbled upon Cult of Youth's previous full-length, "A Stick To Bind,A Seed To Grow", and I have been keeping a close eye on them ever since. It's a dark and deeply personal album by one Mr. Sean Ragon, a long time Brooklyn native. This record has so many different elements from various periods in heathen-folk, early goth, and weighs pretty heavy on the pagan chant tip.The lyrics are brutally honest, and filled to the brim with raging fire and black smoke, and just about all of them possess a deep ritualistic occult quality.
Ragon and crew are back with this excellent mini-LP."Filthy Plumage on an Open Sea" kicks off in orderly fashion with a dense blissful strumming and a climbing piano crawl that creeps through most of the track.Ragon joins in with his patented deep croon, and is soon joined by some equally staunch backing voices.COY has always been good at keeping their ultra-dark content somewhat weightless and pleasant. These six tracks prove to be more than just another neo-folk jaunt from this group. At times, the light strumming and haunting backgrounds can bring early Death in June, but the vibe here is much murkier on all fronts.Elements of more traditional folk tactics, and pleasantly clouded group vocal harmonies are more present here, and it pays off pretty handsomely for them in the end.
"Traitorous Blood" is the standout track for me.A rich and rhythmic romp through some mid-paced acoustic percussion, carried by howling black energies.Something about this song is so powerful and invigorating, you will want to play this at high volumes on repeat."Catchy" is quite an understatement. These songs are so insanely infectious and at times hair-raising.Ragon's songwriting has indeed matured since their last lp, and there is a natural progression that sweeps through this batch of songs that radiates feelings of triumphant victory. This is war music for the quiet types.Honest ad heavy, without being too overbearing.A great record, that hopefully gives us some insight to their upcoming LP on Sacred Bones.

L.A. VAMPIRES MEETS ZOLA JESUS - "Collab. 12" (NNF)

If you are familiar with either of these two insanely talented ladies, or any of their other projects, then you will know that you are in for quite an amazing treat with this collaboration LP.Long time L.A. psych-chant-charmers Pocahaunted front-woman -Amanda Brown, provides the better portion of the music on this record, conjuring up her somewhat patent dub-soaked-psych washes, and more than a few layers of lo-fi bumps, claps, and hazy low-end dirge to keep you swaying along to.Grainy synth drones slowly build and swell up only to fizzle away, as new melodies are being introduced constantly throughout the song.Sometimes a solid and rather "funky" bass line will sneak it's way in, if only for a second, providing a bit of swagger beneath the surface.A fair amount of this is somewhat comparable to Brown's recent dub/lo-fi soul project,Vibes, only slower and darker.
While Brown contributes her woozy, more psych/dub inspired embers, Nika Danilova aka: Zola Jesus tosses her goth inspired, desperate croon onto the fire and really sets this ablaze. Her deep and affected, soaring voice immediately finds it's way into Brown's chanted howl.Setting a tense and foreboding tone that flows through these songs. At times, their voices sync up in such perfect harmony it sends chills up your spine. They never seem to drown each other out or butt heads, and instead form a single, beautiful and powerful voice.Together they create vast, vibrant movements that spiral upward, taking some unexpected twists and turns, gently landing you back on your feet.An nearly perfect blend of bright, pastoral flashes and dark, cavernous hymns .Best collabo record of 2010.
"There is no light without darkness".

DAILY VOID - "THE ECLIPSE OF 1453" 12"EP (Sacred Bones)

Hot damn!Definitely one of the better Sacred Bones releases I've heard this year. This thing rips and shreds at from front to back. The Eclipse of 1453 is a bit more polished and put together than their previous output on labels like Hozac and Florida's Dying, but not enough to tarnish their awesomely grainy, noisy charm. These songs much more eerie and unsettling on this record.A definite plus,in my opinion.

Finally, mid 80's death-punk is making it's way back into record stores. This stuff is starting to pop up all over the place, and it's about time!I love this record.Six tracks of dark and viciously catchy punk anthems about death, dying and things that go bump in the night. The loose,cave-dwelling rhythms and rumbling bass lines propel their rather uneasy, venomous vocal barrage through a tattered echo-chamber.This shit is the real deal.Short and fast and "get the fuck outta the way" written all over it.Specimen, 45 Grave, Screamers, Christian Death, Black Flag, and Flux of Pink Indians might come to mind, and that is definitely a good thing.I hope we get to hear more from these guys,STAT.

KAYO DOT - "Coyote" 2xLP/CD (Hydrahead Industries)

I have to admit, this review may be a bit biased, seeing as Kayo Dot have been an big obsession of mine since their birth as a band.I really love them to death, and this record is totally mind blowing and all,but instead of the rant/rave torture...I will just give you the facts.DEAL?

Coyote
is the fourth looong player from songwriter/composer/overflow of talent - Toby Driver and his main vehicle,KAYO DOT.He somehow found time in between writing an equally amazing new Maudlin of the Well reunion record(woah!)to write this entire beast of an album.Always evolving musically(as well as aesthetically),Driver has once again brought together a fantastic group of players to accompany him on his quest for a new genrea. And they sure have found it with this one.Guests spots include former member Terran Olson, trumpet man-Tim Byrnes of counterpoint-jazz troupe Friendly Bears and avant-composition act Hazel Rah.Although Driver is the main brain behind all of this, these songs show an obvious chemistry between these folks. On stage they possess an energy and unspoken confidence that most bands can only wish to adopt. It is as overtly exhilarating as it is inspiring.A perfect blend of that old "what's going to happen next? " and "Oh,I remember this..".Comfy terror?Sure.

The songs on Coyote take some semi-obvious cues from the Blue Lambency Downward era, heavy on that loose and rhythmic, blackened free-jazz-flutter they do so very well.Kind of like Ornette Coleman jamming with Dirty Three covering Return to Forever jams,in a decade yet to happen.Blue..had an unmistakable drum tone(Charlie from Behold the Arctopus) that carried the whole thing along so perfectly. This recording may have a different drummer, but he pushes the music in all direction with totally unique chops and unbearable precision, without being flashy or overbearing.Toby Driver's got this unintentionally patented guitar tone that washes over his Scott Walker-like croons and wails with such ease.Odd chords whirl around him, with a heavy reverb and delay treatment, bouncing off each other to no end. It's so far beyond cohesive that it could only work for them alone. These songs are much more than just abrasive music and clever words, they are chock-full of beautiful brass and string arrangements, orchestrated guitar compositions, and gloomy-yet-dreamy baroque jazz ballads. There are some not-so-obvious goth references being knocked around here at times, and it's just another element to add to their already massive sound collage. This is a perfect album right down to the song order.Easily their most prolific work to date, and that says ALOT for this band.

I could go on about this for an eternity,so if you dig Maudlin of the Well, City of Caterpillar, Red Sparrowes, Dysrhythmia and the epic prog-bliss dudes alike, then you are just starting to get the idea."Far beyond expectations" is their thing, and they have absolutely done it again with Coyote.Another brutal epic under their belt, and already my vote for record of the year. They are recording a new EP as I type this.Out this summer on Hydrahead.

THE HORRORS - Primary Colours LP

Since when did this band get so good? They dropped the spooky,ghoulish,retro-garage shtick for some really solid, simple pop songwriting.Dark synth drones swirl around thick, spacey guitar swells, and some killer Ian Curtis-like crooning has replaced that over-the-top snarls from their past efforts.I remember hearing "She is the new Thing" a few years back, and never thinking twice about this group. This is a serious overhaul for the band, and I hope they keep doing what they are doing.File under psych/pop/goth/rock/nostalgia.TAKE A LISTEN.

THE BATCAVE (R.I.P.) - Mini Documentary [1984]

From 1982-1984 THE BATCAVE was thee hot spot for British Goth and New Wave Punk subculture. The club quickly birthed a whole mess of killer Goth, punk and new wave bands within the 2 years of it's existence.Owner and operator Ollie Wisdom also fronted the band Specimen.Along with Specimen,Alien Sex Fiend,Sex Gang Children, and Sexbeat were regular house acts during the week.SEX?Sure.DJs Hamish 'the paranoid' McDonald and Annie Hogan spun fresh and dark sounds at the club on a nightly basis. It's bizarre style and dark vibe attracted the more well known figures in the scene.Nick Cave,Steve Severin,Robert Smith,Marc Almond, and Siouxsie Sioux were all common faces at the Batcave, making it a "Studio 54 for weirdos" to some Batcavers. It retains it's extreme elitist and fashion-forward reputation to this very day.

In 1983, a vinyl record entitled "The BatCave, Young Limbs & Numb Hymns" was released on the London recording label. The compilation included Specimen (Dead Mans Autochop), Sexbeat (Sex Beat), Test Dept. (Shockwork), Patti Palladin (The Nuns New Clothes), James T. Pursey (Eyes Shine Killidiscope), Meat of Youth (Meat of Youth), Brilliant (Coming Up For The Downstroke), Alien Sex Fiend (R.I.P.), and The Venomettes (The Dance of Death). The inside notes: "Look past the slow black rain of a chill night in Soho;Ignore the lures of a thousand neon fire-flies, fall deft to the sighs of street corner sirens...come walk with me between heaven and hell. Here there is a club lost in its own feverish limbo, where sin becomes salvation and only the dark angels tread. For here is a BATCAVE.

This screaming legend of blasphemy, Lechery, and Blood persists in the face of adversity. For some the Batcave has become an icon, but for those that know it is an iconoclast, it is the avenging spirit of nightlife's badlands — its shadow looms large over London's demi-Monde: It is a challenge to the false Idol. It Will Endure."Which didn't exactly ring true.Near the end of 1984 the Batcave closed it's doors for good, only to be resurrected again in 2008 for a 25th anniversary party.Specimen reformed and recorded the event for a live album called "Specimen:Alive at the Batcave".It is still available through Metropolis/Eyeswideshut Records.

From The Vaults: RED WEDDING -"NAILS" 12 Inch EP (1984)

Red Wedding formed in L.A. around 1981.Nails is their second, and final release, following
the 1982 "Up and Down the Aisle" EP.Stumbling in and around Goth,Glam Rock, and Post-Punk,Red Wedding were a different breed altogether. The cliche of drugs, sex, and rock n' roll were a very real way of life for them. They worked hard and played harder, often burning the candle at both ends.Of course, this fast-paced lifestyle took it's toll on the band.Cursed with low budget recordings and production,as well as other studio complications, they still seemed to bang out some pretty amazing records.Although short lived, they made their presence quite well known in the early 80's L.A. punk scene.Check them out.

From the L.A. Times Music Review section,1984:

"What is Red Wedding?
A psychedelic-glam band? A techno-wave outfit? A hard-rock unit? On its new EP "Nails," the band defies categorization, offering effusively hallucinatory images grounded to a solid rock base, but there is something strangely retrogressive in the mad-professor synthesizer bubblings and Hendrix-like guitar roars. The sound is so hard to get a handle on it's almost perverse."

ZOLA JESUS - The Stridulum EP (Sacred Bones)

Nika Danilova is Zola Jesus. She lives in New York. She is barely of drinking age,and already has 5 or so killer releases under her belt. Her cousin is Dead Luke. She plays in Former Ghosts with members of Xiu Xiu and This Song Is A Mess But So Am I.As well as Nika+Rory, and Pris/Cog.This girl is on top of shit right now,and her music is only getting better and more defined with each release.

On her latest opus,Stridulum, Nika and the band seem to be floating towards a more cohesive and somewhat polished studio sound. Not to say that this is in ANY way a bad thing for them. It's not.The songs on Stridulum are solid as ever. They have a clarity that you can't really find on past ZJ records. There is still a deep sense of the cavernous ambiance that made The Spoils so great, but everything is pushed to the foreground this time, instead of looming beneath the vocals and blurry layers of synths. Her vocals are a perfect for this kind of production.Much clearer than their previous albums. She's perfected her Siouxie-like croon, and given it more depth and tonality here. There's some nice harmonies that show off her voice control and range. Her words pleasantly wash over brooding waves of synths, chants, and thick, primitive electro thumps.

Stridulum is by no means her first "proper" album,it's a 6 song ep.But this is Zola Jesus' finest hour. These songs will leave you empty, yet hopeful.Dark sounds for cold nights. But,through the obvious gloom and doom, they are uplifting and radiant. They are perfecting their craft at every turn.A fantastic piece of work by an extremely talented young woman, and she is is just getting started.Thank you for Zola Jesus.

FRIGHT IS A NEW RECORD LABEL.

FRIGHT
is a record label owned and operated by John Berry and Michael Mayer (Kompakt Label). They run things out of New York, and have some amazing releases on the horizon. They are calling this "serial killer synth symphonies".Whatever you wanna call it,it's going to be amazing.Their first release being a 12" by Chicago's GATEKEEPER (.This stuff is awesome.Anyone who is familiar with Claudio Simonetti's(Goblin) later soundtrack work, and even the earlier Goblin work (Suspiria, Zombi, etc..) will LOVE this record.Even some of the early John Carpenter work has rubbed off a bit here.I really can't get enough of it.Dark and dazzling.A decade of Italo-Horror Soundtracks in four movements. It's about time this music was resurrected.

Gatekeeper
's "Optimus Maximus" keeps it creepy with a heap of stingy synth stabs, looming atop solid, danceable beats.Arpeggios are key in this duo's work, keeping the spooky synth runs nicely aligned with the haunting low end bumps. The tracks are for the most part,vocal-free,all but for a few voice samples here and there. There is a shimmery dance vibe that rings throughout these dark tunes, without overdoing the nostalgia.Overall this is a very dark and extremely catchy Italo-disco album, and I want more.NOW.Keep an ear out for Creep,White Car,Antoni Maiovvi,Salem, and a bunch more creepers, soon.More on Fright sooner than later.

BLESSURE GRAVE -"Judged by 12,Carried by 6" (Alien8)

2009: year of the old-school goth? Seems everyone these days is unashamedly reclaiming their goth roots and really, thank god for it; without the likes of Sacred Bones and Captured Tracks helping to usher in a new day of darker-than-dark releases, we might’ve been stuck in that cheesy post-industrial meets candy-raver purgatory forever. And though Cold Cave is arguably at the forefront of the whole thing (thanks in part to Matador giving them a go), San Diego duo Blessure Grave is far and away the most promising of the bunch.

But Blessure Grave’s latest—and by far my favorite, despite the amazing Learn To Love The Rope EP—can’t be reduced to sheer revivalism; this is an album far more intricate than that. Sure, it harkens back to Play Dead, Bauhaus and even early Front 242 in equal measure, but at the heart of Judged By 12, Carried By 6 is that undefinable thing, a mystifying X factor: it just gets you. Judged isn’t great because it takes a cue from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry; it’s great because the songs are evocative and dramatic. Because there’s something in the sweet sadness of “In The First Place” and its strained guitar, or the frantic layers of melody on “Stop Breathing”, that feels like a punch in the face. Like the first time you heard Unknown Pleasures and wondered how anything could be so miserably lovely.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Blessure Grave is primed to be the next Joy Division—such a distinction barely exists anyway—or that Judged will necessarily be the album that catapults them into the throngs. But if their momentum thus far is any indication (and really, the songs just get better and better), Blessure Grave is headed for a long run of beautifully stark releases—as well as a much-deserved place at the top of this nouveau-goth heap.

{{ZOLA JESUS}}

I am currently celebrating their entire catalog, especially The Spoils, and Tsar Bomba lp's.Both are great records. This is joyously dark music, and I am totally stoked on what this band will sound like in two years or so..assuming they stick it out that long. It's hard to say these days, with something this wildly unique and brave, you know it's bound to implode without any notice.Let's hope not. Here's a few reviews.

TSAR BOMBA LP (TMU) - Zola Jesus, known in real life as Nika Roza Danilova, is a striking woman, with pale skin and long glossy black hair, dressed conservatively, almost primly by rock standards, and with a certain chilly reserve about her. She looks every inch the classically trained vocalist that she is – and so it is a bit of a surprise when she begins wailing into the mic, howling and keening above industrial abrasions of synth and drum machine. Like Jarboe in Swans, she floats arias atop a grinding mash of inhuman noise. Like Caberet Voltaire, she and her band perform obscure sonic rituals to mesh spirit and machine. There is, perhaps, a bit more frivolity implied in these dance-ish synth rhythms than No Wave ever allowed, but not much. If pop enters in, as it does sometimes in Danilova’s sweet middle register, it is quickly swamped by tides of distortion.

Zola Jesus – both the name of the band and the stage name of its singer – emerged out of Madison, Wisconsin in 2008 with two singles, a self-titled 7” and Soeur Sewer. Earlier this year, she and her band – Dead Luke on synths, Lindsay Mikkola on bass and Max Elliott on drums – recorded a full-length, mostly live at WNYU called New Amsterdam.

It’s a short career arc, so far, but within it, Zola Jesus seems to be moving towards ever more abstract, less naturally human songs. Consider the one song that Tsar Bomba shares one song with New Amsterdam, for instance. Here “New Day” lasts just over a minute (versus 4:28 on New Amsterdam). Instrumentation has been cut to a minimum. In the first version, live drums kept strident time and synthesizers washed in melodic waves. It sounded like a song. Now a programmed drum beat splinters and shatters dimly, in the background, and keyboards merely drone. Danilova’s voice has become both more central and more distorted, its gospelly strength chilled with a blast of echoey negative space. It is like blues sung from space, cold, distant and mesmerizing.

None of these tracks are built on catchy melodies, but rather rely on texture, mood and odd juxtapositions to get their unsettling points across. “Sea Talk”, late in the album, is the most accessible, its rattle and clatter beat partly obscuring Danilova’s bravura vocal swoops. “Do you want to know-ow-ow?” she belts, in a rich, pop-leaning voice, as someone hammers at a piano and the drum machine runs rampant. She’s a diva trapped in a metal stamping factory, an artist singing from the bottom of a well, frustratingly removed, but also, perhaps, more interesting for the distance. You catch a glimpse, occasionally, of the liquid beauty of her voice, trilling through the industrial waste of “Flesh” or haunting the very end of “Rester” with ethereal grace, and it’s like spotting a ghost, hair-raising, mysterious and fleeting.

THE SPOILS LP (sacred bones) - Sacred Bones is proud to present The Spoils from Zola Jesus. Hailing from the unsuspecting locale of Madison, wi, Zola Jesus - the alter ego of Nika Roza Danilova - occupy a sphere of sparse industrial rhythms, no-fi drones, and ethereal femme vocals. Those who have seen her handful of live shows, heard her WFMU set, or caught any of the acclaimed, sought after, and now mostly out of print releases on Die Stasi or Troubleman Unlimited already know. For those uninitiated The Spoils may be the most fully realized representation of her sound.

Zola Jesus have two previous releases on Sared Bones, the "Souer Sewer" single and a limited CD of a live performance from WNYU. The CD contains the entire "Soeur Sewer" 7" as well as the three songs from the Die Stasi single.

PRF(PUERTO RICO FLOWERS) '4' - 12"

Post-Clockcleaner, and really, post-America action from the outback’s John Sharkey, offering up four songs of heavy, slow Gothic rock. He wrote and recorded this alone, and this phase of the project (two live sets and a lot of talk) is apparently complete. Clockcleaner’s posthumous recordings are outright Goth/death rock, like nothing they’d done before, and this record showcases a refinement of that sound. Likewise, this material is good enough to sustain a departure to wherever he might want to take this next – sung vocals, bass but no guitars, spare but effective use of synths, and live drums provide a sturdy framework for last-call staredowns like “Let’s Make Friends.” Unsettled, stern dark rock bands like the Comsat Angels and Crispy Ambulance factor greatly into this product, one among many in the Great Coldwave Freezeout of 2010, but certainly one of the most memorable.
